Seven Tips to Grow Your Subscriber List

Here’s a disturbing fact – you lose around a fifth of your subscribers each year. Sometimes this is natural wastage – people don’t need your products anymore and so move on – but some of this loss is your fault and you can stem it by upping your email game.

In no particular order, here are seven tips for growing and maintaining your subscriber list.

Make sure your emails are engaging and worth reading

You want your subscribers to think “Ooh!” rather than “Oof!” when they see another of your emails in their inbox, so send them exciting and informative content that means they never think of hitting the unsubscribe button.

Hold a giveaway contest on social media

Hold a contest where entrants have to submit their emails to enter, then make sure you publish details (and pics if possible) of the winner or winners so that people know it’s real.

Add a sign-up button to your Facebook page

When people sign up they must enter their email address and signing up will let them access extra content, discounts or whatever you know will appeal to them.

Run a promotion on a partner website

Or on a partner’s email newsletter. This will generate some interest among an already dedicated audience in your niche and you’ll garner some email addresses from it.

Go retro and actually talk to people

Like, face-to-face, using sounds and gestures… If you go to trade shows or run a physical shop, then you can ask people to fill out forms to go on your mailing list. You must include – and respect – requests for only certain modes of communication to be used though. If someone says postal only – well, it’s a partial result.

Use a lead-generation campaign on Twitter

Or on any social media platform. If you’ve written a special guide, or you’re offering a discount, then you can promote it online by asking people to sign up to your mailing list if they want access.

Offer targeted emails

Some people only want to hear about offers and discounts, others want advice, others want everything you have to send, so divide your content into categories and give people the chance to choose or eschew them.
