Google Ads Performance Max Fraudulent Traffic

30 July 2022

Have you received SPAM enquiries from a Viva Digital email address? Please be aware these enquiries are NOT coming from our business and this is completely out of our control. We are also a victim of this situation. Please read on…

After consulting with agency owners facing the same issue, we are 99% sure this is happening to businesses that use the new Performance Max campaigns in Google Ads. Overseas click farms are exploiting Google AdSense ads to generate false revenue by clicking on ads. After clicking the ad, they then complete a form on the website to trigger a conversion action, so that Google assumes the traffic is genuine. They have randomly chosen our own URL to use when submitting these forms.

Our recommendation to any business facing this issue:

  • Stop running Performance Max campaigns in Google Ads and revert to traditional campaign types
  • Report the issue to Google Ads support and your Google Ads manager
  • Block rogue countries and VPNs from accessing your website

We have reported this to Google Ads many times, who are yet to respond with any kind of solution. I think if we all keep reporting it, they will have to find a solution soon.

Update October 2022: Please take the time to watch these videos, which have a new solution from Google Ads:
