Find the right keywords for your market
One: Look at the competition
You may or may not like your competitors, but they’re in the same business as you, reaching out for the same potential customers. This is why their keywords will work for you – have a sift through the content and also their blogs and look for keywords and phrases that you’re not already using. This includes page titles and meta descriptions.
Tools like SEMRush show you the top keywords that your rivals use and this can also give you a good insight as to how they work and how their (and your) customers think.
Two: Take a look at Google Trends
Google Trends gives you a list of keywords and keyphrases that’s straight from Google’s own search data. You can use the comparison feature to see how each word works and you can also monitor the keywords that are rising in frequency and popularity – as well as those that are fading. There’s regional filters too, as well as seasonal ones, making this a handy tool indeed.
Three: Give Wordtracker a whirl
Wordtracker is similar to the Google Adwords Keyword tool. You copy in words and phrases from your website and it gives you useful alternatives. This tool will work well if you are trying to stand out a little from the competition, as you can throw in a few synonyms here and there. It’s got a very user-friendly format and is an ideal keyword tool for anyone new to ecommerce.
Four: Use a web marketing optimisation tool
This sounds a bit complicated but it’s actually very simple. Examples of these tools include BoostSuite and Internet Marketing Ninjas’ own tool. These widgets constantly look out for new content opportunities based on your existing page content as well as that of your competition and also your visitors’ search phrases. Some tools offer the opportunity to join forums where you can get one-to-one help and advice from experts and people just like you.
Using this sort of tool means you can stay a step ahead of the curve and start creating the optimal content at just the right time.
Five: Remember, it’s not all about Google
OK, it’s almost all about Google, but there are other search engines out there.
Most important among the other search engines is Bing, Microsoft’s own engine. Bing is a valuable tool and you can use it alongside Microsoft’s Advertising Intelligence plug-in to grow and improve your list of keywords. As a small business owner you’re probably familiar with MS Excel and you’ll be relieved to know that you can use MIA in Excel. MIA gives you keyword expansions from the ones you already use and really thinks outside the box (or cell) sometimes.
